“These Olives Are Perfect This Year!”
There are some mornings when the countryside feels peaceful and quiet, with birds singing, leaves gently moving in the breeze, and the warm sun shining through the trees. Then there are olive-picking mornings, when everyone is busy, baskets are filling up, and somebody inevitably becomes the unofficial quality-control manager of the entire grove. Today, that important job belongs to one enthusiastic lady who is carefully picking olives from a tree. As she reaches between the branches, she examines the olives with a proud smile before announcing, “These olives are perfect this year! They’re so plump! Keep them coming, girls!” Her voice immediately carries through the olive grove, giving everyone an extra boost of motivation. The other women continue picking olives from nearby trees, gathering the fruit carefully and placing it into their baskets. Nobody seems interested in slowing down now. When the olives are this good, apparently, there is work to be done! The lady continues working her way through the branches, carefully selecting the ripe olives while occasionally checking her progress. Every handful seems to deserve another compliment. “Look at these!” she might as well be saying. “Beautiful! Perfect! Put them in the basket!” At this rate, she could probably give a full presentation about olive quality before lunchtime.
Around her, the other women are just as busy. Some reach high into the branches, while others collect olives that have fallen onto the nets spread beneath the trees. The grove becomes a lively workplace filled with conversation, laughter, and the satisfying sound of olives landing in the baskets. There is something wonderfully communal about olive harvesting. Nobody is working alone. Everyone has a job, and everyone keeps the process moving. One person picks, another gathers, another sorts, and someone else inevitably provides encouragement from across the grove.
